LAHORE, Feb 5: Federal Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan says Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has convened another coordination meeting on Tuesday (tomorrow) to discuss the sugar price issue.
Talking to newsmen at an exhibition at the College of Home Economics here on Sunday, he said the prime minister had already doubled the monthly sugar supply to utility stores from 11,000 tons to 22,000 tons.
He said 50,000 tons of sugar was being imported from India through rail and road, via Wagha..
The minister said that sugar prices were on the up at the international level due to hike in oil prices. Brazil, the biggest sugar producing country, had switched over to fuel ethanol which ultimately affected the sugar price worldwide.
To a question regarding South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA), the minister expressed the hope that federal cabinet would rectify it in its next meeting. He said that sensitive list of trading items had been finalized in consultation with all stakeholders and it would be effective from July 1 next.—APP
