DHAKA, Feb 5: Awami League president Sheikh Hasina said on Sunday her party was considering moving the parliament over the opposition’s proposals for reforms in the caretaker administration and the election commission.

“If needed, we will try to pilot the proposals in the parliament,” Sheikh Hasina said while addressing participants at the end of an opposition-sponsored three-day ‘long march’ to Dhaka.

Sheikh Hasina warned that she might resign from parliament if the treasury bench does not pay heed to the opposition’s demand for electoral reforms.

“If the proposals are not accepted, we will resign from parliament,” Sheikh Hasina said.

The opposition parties organised the long march to pressure the government of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia into stepping down.

About 8,000 security personnel were deployed in Dhaka during the opposition’s march.

Sheikh Hasina risks losing her seat if she does not end her boycott of parliament by Feb 13 as on that day she would complete the 90th consecutive day of absence from the House. This would automatically invalidate membership. Sheikh Hasina has also threatened to boycott the general election if the election commission is not reformed.
