3 soldiers killed in Wana; arms seized

By Our Correspondent

WANA, Feb 4: Three paramilitary soldiers were killed when their vehicle hit an explosive device planted on a dirt track near the Afghan border in South Waziristan Agency on Saturday, it is learnt.

Sources said that the incident took place at around 4pm when a convoy of the South Waziristan Scouts was heading from Khan Koot to Zermilan, south of Wana.

“It was an improvised explosive device, planted on a track near the Afghan border,” said a security official.

Officials said that culprits had not been identified, but suspected militants’ involvement in the act of terrorism. The vehicle was badly damaged. Scout Mohammad Azam Khattak died on the spot while two others, whose names could not be ascertained, were wounded and taken to a military hospital where they succumbed to injuries.

Meanwhile, outlaws blew up a check-post in the Khasaddar area on Friday night, officials said.

They said that six unidentified people disarmed the guard at the check-post near the airfield in Wana and planted explosive material which went off after awhile with a big bang.

Meanwhile, security forces seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition and arrested three persons near Miramshah in North Waziristan Agency on Saturday. ISPR officials in Peshawar said that arms were recovered from two trucks carrying firewood.

They said the trucks coming from Datakhel area were stopped at Dwa Toye check-post. During checking mortar shells, automatic weapons, fuses of improvised explosive devices and explosive material were found beneath the firewood. Officials said that three tribesmen were arrested and political authorities had started investigation.
