Golf: Henry takes lead with seven birdies
LOS ANGELES, Feb 4: American J.J. Henry reeled off seven consecutive birdies on the way to a blistering 10-under-par 61 in the Phoenix Open second round in Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday.
Producing an error-free display in bright sunshine on the rock-hard Stadium Course at the TPC of Scottsdale, Henry finished one stroke off the course record with an early four-shot lead at 14-under 128.
Henry’s closest challenger was compatriot J.B. Holmes, who got to nine under for the day after eagling the par-five 15th before bogeying 17 for a 64.
Three-times champion Mark Calcavecchia, who carded a second successive 67, and Sony Open winner David Toms, after a 66, were a further two strokes back in a tie for third.
One behind them were American Jonathan Byrd, who shot a 65, and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas, who birdied his last two holes for a 67.
Of the late starters, defending champion Phil Mickelson was at eight under with four holes to play while joint overnight leader Steve Lowery was at nine under after 16.
Germany’s Alex Cejka, the other pacesetter after the opening round, dropped four shots over the last six holes for a 73 and a 36-hole total of four-under 138.
