Victory Road should land 1000 Guineas of Pakistan

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Feb 4: Four-year-old bay filly, Victory Road, will have to be at her best to land 1000 Guineas of Pakistan to be run over 1600 metres during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The race featuring a lengthy card of ten events will be contested by country’s top nine four-year-old fillies. They will be vying to outduel Victory Road in a bid to end her Karachi’s unbeaten winning streak.

A daughter of Re Play out-of-Coxswain, Victory Road will be salvaging home pride and justifying owner M. Shahrukh’s confidence reposed in buying her at a record highest price ever paid for a filly or a colt.

The recent performance and the track work puts Victory Road far ahead of her eight opponents in this term race for four-year-old fillies.

The notable rivals are Poly Nest, Trace Hit and Miss Pole. Interestingly leading owner Khawaja M. Arif has put his three fillies Poly Nest, Trace hit and Chici Chita for the biggest classic event in the life of four-year-old fillies.

To win or lose altogether is a different proposition but the interest of every eligible owner is there.

The 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan carries a purse of Rs200,000 to the winner plus a cup valued at rupees 10,000.

The fillies placed second, third are to receive Rs100,000 and Rs50,000 while the breeder of the champion filly will get rupees Rs15,000.

However, the most cherished event and the highlight of Sunday’s meeting race will be TRM cup for imported thoroughbreds, a cream of which will be contesting the race over 2000 metres gruelling distance.

Nine mares and fillies besides a colt will be measuring each other’s strides in this eagerly awaited event.

On pedigree and recent performance of the contenders, Dinner Guest, Colonial Girl, Potente and Chandni are expected to battle for top honours.

Here too Khawaja M. Arif has fielded two horses Dinner Guest and Chandni. The winner should be from the two, who are the progenies of the top French sires and American Dams. This will be the tenth and last race of the day.

There is another cup event, the Anarkali cup, a term race for three-year-old fillies to be run over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.

Of the seven contestants Big Show, Don’t’ Follow and Trace Kim should fight it out for honours. It should be a keenly contested race between the three and the saddle skill of the rider will matter most in this sixth race of the day.

Four-year-old colt Alexander looks well-placed in the handicap to win the eighth race to be gone over 1400 metres. Fidel Castro, Ghazi Rifle and Poly Dunit will fight for the less remunerative odds.

Lucky Coin, Fajr and Royal Fantasy are the pick of the seventh race to be contested over 1400 metres. However, the main contest should be between Lucky Coin and Fajr.

Grey Swallow, Poly Love and Herry Can Run look good in the fifth race to be contested over 1200 metres. They should finish in the same order.

Toru Khan, a progeny of Tora Bora owned by Huzaifa Shoaib should make amends for his defeat last time out and win the fourth race.

His main rivals will be Zardan, Para Game and Gold Bird. The third race will be contested by a big field of 18 runners barring last-minute withdrawals.

Namroud, First Look, Eye Of The Tiger and Mera Chandiwala are the chance ones in this race.

However, Namroud is better placed in the handicap to have an edge over the other three.

The first race will be held at 11.30am.
