Jones breaks world record

MELBOURNE, Feb 1: Australian Leisel Jones shattered her own world record in the women’s 200-metres breaststroke in a time of two minutes 20.54 seconds at the Australian Commonwealth Games swimming trials on Wednesday.

Jones raced away in the final 50m of the race to slash 1.18 seconds off her old mark set at last July’s world championships.

It was the third world record in three days of the Australian trials in the pool where next month’s Commonwealth Games swimming program will be held.

Libby Lenton regained the world record in the women’s 100m freestyle with a time of 53.42 seconds on Tuesday and Jade Edmistone lowered her 50m breaststroke record with 30.31secs in Monday’s heats.—Agencies
