DADU, Jan 30: The Dadu district council through a resolution has opposed construction of the Kalabagh dam over the Indus river and demanded from President General Pervez Musharraf to stop the project.

District Naib Nazim Syed Mohammad Shah chaired the first session of the district council, which was held at the district council hall here on Monday. The government-backed-member of the council, Abid Hussain Lakhair, moved a resolution against proposed construction of the Kalabagh dam.

He alleged the Punjab establishment was not giving complete share of water to Sindh which was affecting agriculture and economy of the province.

Another member of the council Ali Mohammad Soomro backing the resolution said the government should respect resolutions passed by the three smaller provinces against the dam.

Talking about the NFC award, he said Sindh was paying major revenue to the federal government but the federal government had announced a small sum for Sindh.

He said the award should be distributed on revenue basis rather than population basis.

Mr Soomro also opposed army ‘operation’ in Balochistan.

Awam Dost Panel member Ali Bux Solangi said that construction of the Kalabagh was a plan to divide Pakistan.

Talking about funds, he said Rs1.5 million were released by the president of Pakistan for each union council but his UC was deprived of the amount as the district government was victimizing ADP nazims in the Dadu district.

Later, the members unanimously passed the resolution against construction of the Kalabagh dam and appealed to the president to stop its construction.
