Sugarcane price linked to quality

Published January 31, 2006

LAHORE, Jan 30: The Federal Cane Committee on Monday agreed to link price of sugar cane to quality, thus connecting the price with sucrose content. The committee, which met under the chairmanship of the Minister of State for Food, decided to form an 11-member body comprising millers, farmers and cane technologists to finalize the execution plan.

The committee also decided to install a core sampler at every mill to gauge the sugar content in cane and decide the price. The meeting took the decision to improve research on cane by outsourcing it to private parties, and help introduce new high-yielding varieties for farmers.

It also expressed concern over the decrease in the sugar cane acreage and promised to take measures for its enhancement in the next few years.
