KARACHI, Jan 29: It was a day of upsets as outsiders reigned supreme disappointing the racegoers in the Winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

In a card of eight races following cancellation of one, five races produced unexpected results.

The racing fraternity also expressed their anger as the KRC cancelled the third race of the programme citing want of competition after Silver City and Countess Mah Again were withdrawn leaving nine contestants in fray.

Four-year-old chestnut colt, Terrorist, owned by Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara, who was tipped to win second time, was withdrawn prior to the race.

In addition, low profiled horses dominated the field in most of the races as it was not the day of enthusiasts.

Six-year-old bay horse, Raka Poshi, created quite a stir by winning top honours in the opener. Samroon and Taneez secured second and third slots while Baby Tabassum completed the frame.

Another upset was in store when mare, Piyari Mehbooba, surprised all and sundry grabbing the next race beating Laurel by short head. Super Time was placed third.

Jockey Tariq Baran presented owner Syeda Hidayatullah a surprise win when he piloted four-year-old colt, Excalibur, home by two lengths. Chaleswan Chur settled for second place followed by Shan-e-Arab.

Upsetting all calculations, four-year-old colt, Harry Potter, with Sohail Ahmed in the saddle, captured the fifth race leaving behind favourite seven-year-old mare, Bang On Target, to secure third position. M. R. Hussain’s filly, Makina, occupied second place.

Owner-cum-trainer Ehtisham Rizvi’s six-year-old mare, Eager Saint, enhanced her value by picking up the spoils in the sixth race. She was chased by Mera Jugnoo and Auzy.

Living up to his billing, Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s bay horse Deniro trained by Talib Hussain sprinted to victory beating mare Sonia by four-and-a-half lengths.

The eighth race brought glory to owner Haji Khuda Bux Rajar when his four-year-old colt, Smarty Jones, returned with flying colours in style by six-and-a-half lengths.

In a photo-finish, four-year-old colt, Yes Naeem, got the better of filly, Eswarah, by a head in the concluding event.
