Stenson atones for last year’s near miss
DOHA, Jan 29: Henrik Stenson made amends for his heartbreaking one-shot defeat to Ernie Els last year by winning the ninth edition of the Qatar Masters by three shots over England’s Paul Broadhurst on Sunday.
The 29-year-old Swede collected the 333,330-dollar top prize and in the process became the first golfer in the history of the event to win in Doha after leading the field over all four rounds.
The Sharjah-based Stenson, who also finished second last Sunday in the Abu Dhabi Championship, which was won by American Chris Di Marco, played solid golf in windy conditions to post a 68 in the final round for a total of 15 under par 273.
Stenson finished strongly with a birdie on the 18th which Broadhurst could only par.
Broadhurst shot a 70 to finish with an aggregate of 12 under 276, while South African Darren Fichardt, the 2003 champion, took third place with a total of 11 under 277.

Woods bounces back
LA JOLLA (California): Tiger Woods fired the best round of the day posting a five-under 67 to move within one shot of the leaders at the Buick Invitational tournament here on Saturday.
Spain’s Sergio Garcia and Australia’s Rod Pampling each shot rounds of four-under-par 68 to forge a tie for the lead at 11-under 205 heading into Sunday’s final round of the 5.1 million dollar PGA event.
The two are trailed by a stroke by Woods and Aussie Nathan Green. Green shot a 69, but it was Woods who made up the most ground.
