DHAKA, Jan 27: A senior member of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s cabinet, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, on Friday urged Indian people to raise voice against their government’s injustice to Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries for depriving them of common resources, including water.
“We urge Indian citizens to ask their government to be rational towards neighbouring countries and give their due share of common resources, including waters,” local government and rural development minister Mr Bhuiyan said.
He was inaugurating the 11th biennial conference of the Forum of Environment Journalists Bangladesh (FEJB) in the city.
Mr Bhuiyan, who is also the secretary-general of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, said Dhaka had been facing a serious ecological imbalance, environmental degradation and climate change because of the man-made crisis.
Most of the main rivers, he said, had dried up while other rivers had abnormally low water levels. He said Bangladesh was not getting adequate flow of waters during lean periods.
The minister said the country was experiencing erratic climate because of the long-term negative impact of water shortage.
