Imported Aussie coaching staff under scrutiny
GEORGETOWN, Jan 27: The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said on Thursday it would conduct a review of Australian coach Bennett King and his four-man team, amid concerns over the international side’s poor performance.
The Antigua-based WICB said its decision was in response to a formal call from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) for the regional cricketing authority to conduct “an evaluation of the performance of the imported coaching staff.”
It said its concerns centred on whether the coaching team’s one million dollar annual salary was reflected in the Caribbean cricket team’s performance.
A four-man team, three of whom played for the West Indies, has been appointed to conduct the evaluation and submit a report to the WICB by Feb 15, the regional board said.
Headed by Jackie Hendriks, the team includes Deryck Murray, Desmond Haynes and Enoch Lewis.
The WICB said the team would review the conditions of employment that relate to the imported coaching staff and to evaluate results achieved to date as well as advise whether in the committee’s view the results justified the investment.
King’s all-Aussie team includes the coach, manager, assistant manager, physiotherapist and trainer.—AFP
