ARREST: The chairman of the Hindu Panchayat in Sukkur, Eshwar Lal, was arrested on Thursday night in a theft case.
Police took his remand for three days after the arrest.
Hindu Panchayats from Sukkur, Larkana, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Daharki and other parts of Sindh have expressed anxiety over arrest and condemned the police action.
The Hindu community and office-bearers of the Panchayat claimed that the arrest took place at the behest of the district administration and some political leaders.
According to police, Raees Pathan, a workshop owner, had registered an FIR against Eshwar Lal stating that Eshwar Lal along with his brother Jawahar Lal and some other persons broke into his shop and stolen machinery and cash worth Rs25,000.
Hindu Panchayat sources said that Raees Pathan occupied the shop illegally which was a property of Gao Shala. They alleged that Pathan never paid any rent to the Panchayat for it and later occupied more land of the Gao Shala.
They said that Eshwar with other members and police had visited the Gao Shala around two days back and removed the encroachment wall, constructed by Raees Pathan.
Later, political leadership of the district government forced police to register a false FIR against Eshwar Lal and others.
Eshwar Lal claimed that his arrest was a political victimization.
