KARACHI, Jan 27: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Sindh has arrested a former chief engineer and a director of Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on charges of corruption, said a NAB press release here on Friday.

Nawaz Ali Samejo, former Wapda chief engineer, and Jan Mohammad, former Wapda director, were arrested for causing loss of millions of rupees to government exchequer by embezzling public funds.

It said some high WAPDA officials during posting at Guddu Thermal Power Plant in Sindh caused loss of millions of rupees through illegal payments to favourite contractors.

Only in one case for purchase of vacuum oil purifier, the accused in connivance with their accomplices embezzled Rs 9 million by showing purifier’s price at Rs 9.9 million, which was actually Rs0.9 million.

Several former and on-duty officials of Wapda are involved in the scandal. The remaining accused are likely to be arrested soon, NAB Sindh said.—PPI
