Lankan navy seizes ship with detonators

By Our Correspondent

COLOMBO, Jan 27 : The Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday said it had seized an Indian trawler, with five Indians on board, and a large number of Indian-made electric detonators similar to those used by the Tamil Tiger rebels.

Navy spokesman D.K.P. Dassanayake said the Navy patrol boats off the northern seas found the trawler packed with over 60,000 electric anti-personnel mine detonators.

The arrested Indian crew members had been handed over to the police after they failed to give satisfactory explanations as to why they were bringing detonators.

The LTTE has reportedly been heavily smuggling in weapons to regions under its control in the northeast of the country, especially during the past four years of ceasefire.
