PM’s entourage maltreatment: debate sought in Senate

ISLAMABAD, Jan 26: Opposition senators on Thursday submitted an adjournment motion to the Senate Secretariat seeking a discussion on the reported humiliation of members of the prime minister’s entourage at the hands of security agencies upon their arrival at New York airport.

Parliamentary secretary of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Izhar Amrohvi told Dawn that the motion had been signed by 10 opposition members and submitted under Rule 74 of the Rules and Procedure for Conduct of Business in Senate 1988.

Earlier, the opposition members had also submitted a similar adjournment motion in the National Assembly on January 23. The motions are based on press reports that “elected members of the National Assembly, senators and even the ministers who were members of the prime minister’s entourage were physically searched at the New York airport.

The motion has been signed by Ishaq Dar, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi and Sajid Mir of the PML-N, Dr Safdar Abbasi, Enver Baig, Farooq Naek and Rukhsana Zuberi of the People’s Party Parliamentarians, Amanullah Kanrani of the Jamhoori Watan Party, Ilyas Bilour of the Awami National Party and Sanaullah Baloch of the Balochistan National Party.
