Federations to receive Rs70m from PST

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Jan 24: An amount of Rs 70 million will be given to 28 national sports federations by the Pakistan Sports Trust (PST) in an attempt to raise the standard of sports in the country.

This is the first time such a hefty sum is being distributed to the federations.

The PST chairman Lt Gen (retd) Arif Hasan told journalists on Tuesday that a system had been finalized under which each federation would get its share.

The PST would announce the details of the funds being provided to each federation on Thursday, the chairman added.

He said that every federation had given their programme of activities to the PST and the specific amount for a federation would be decided on the basis of that plan. Besides, the share of any federation will be considered keeping in view what it had already been getting from the government.

“For example, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is already getting sufficient funds from the government as compared to smaller federations such as martial arts and they will get their due share,” he said.

He explained that the amount was not being paid for only one year as with more activities the federations could get more funds in a year.

“The system is based on the activities and funds will not be a problem for those who show good performance,” he said.

The chairman, who is also the president of the Pakistan Olympic Association, said that no funds were being provided to the provincial Olympic associations.

He said that the PST had already distributed equipment worth Rs 30 million among the federations recently and more funds would be allocated to provide more equipment.

He said that emphasis was also laid on fulfilling the shortcomings of the federations in the technical areas of the sports.

He said that the matter of parallel body in the Pakistan Basketball Federation would be resolved soon.

Similarly, the elections of the Pakistan Bodybuilding Federation would also be held soon, he added.

He regretted that some departments, after the privatisation had closed their sports department and he was trying to stop this trend.
