ISLAMABAD, Jan 22: Pakistan Post has started a programme to computerize pension record of about one million pensioners in the country. According to official sources in the post office department, in the first phase military pension record is being computerized. The department has so far computerized military pension record in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Jhelum while computerization of the same record in other areas is underway.

A total of 1.102 million pensioners, both military and civil, are registered with Pakistan Post throughout the country.

The post office department has taken the step to provide an extensive range of services to the people on their doorstep from its network of 13,419 post offices and 76 general post offices in the country.

It is pertinent to mention here that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has detected a case of 22,000 ghost military pensioners only from the General Post Office (GPO), Peshawar, while cases of similar fraud were detected in Mianwali and Quetta GPOs.

The sources said the post office department had also started ‘electronic letter service’ where letters were being delivered free of cost, adding that nowhere in the world such services were being given.

The department is on the road to new dimensions and providing an extensive range of products and services to cater for both personal and business needs of various segments of the society.

Apart from traditional postal services, it boasts a wide range of banking besides western union money transfer scheme is one of the popular schemes of the post office department.

Due to its timely delivery system, a large number of overseas Pakistanis are now sending their money through this scheme instead of Hundi.—APP
