Polo: Umar’s four goals in vain

LAHORE, Jan 21: Soneri Bank won by virtue of a half goal handicap beating Suzuki Township Motors 8 ½-8 in R G Hyder Polo Cup on Saturday. The losers made a fine start taking 3-1 1/2 lead in the first chukker. Maula Baksh scored two goals while, Umar Sadik, who scored four goals struck his first. For the bankers, Ahmed Ali Tiwana, who struck thrice, scored his first.

The winners earned a slender lead in the second chukker 3 1/2-3 as Ahmed and Asif Nawaz Tiwana, slammed in a goal each.

The losers salvaged the lead (6-5 1/2) in the third chukker in which five goals were scored. Ahmad and Asif struck a goal each for the winners. Umar Sadik (2) and Arslan Najeeb (1) were the scorers for the losers.

Bankers surged ahead 7 1/2-6 in the fourth chukker as Ahmad and Asif pumped in a goal each. But Umar scored his fourth for the losers to reduce the lead. Ahmed again increased the lead scoring his third goal for the winners. Maula Baksh tried to catch the rivals but could only score his third goal for the losers as the bankers completed the win.

In another high scoring but tough match, five goals by Hissam Ali Hyder propelled Bank Alfalah to 8-7 win over CCL.

Agha Murtaza Ali Khan (2) and Taimur Mawaz Khan (1) were the other scorers for the winners.

For CCL, who had two-goal handicap, Ashfaq (3) was the main scorer while Abdul Rahman and Sufi Muhammad Haris chipped in with a goal each.
