KARACHI, Jan 21: Islamabad-based Asim Shafik ruled the second day of Davis Cup trials after clinching two victories in the trial matches of senior category on Saturday at Karachi Gymkhana.
A total of nine matches were played on the second day of trials in two groups — Seniors (Group A) and Juniors (group B) on round robin basis to select two senior and one junior players respectively from each group for the national team who would compete against Chinese Taipei in the opening round of Davis Cup Asia (Oceana Group I) at Chinese Taipei from Feb 10-12.
The Pakistan No2, Asim first overcame M Shafik in straight games and later repeated the same story against local player Jalil Khan to emerge on top after the day two of four-day trials.
The other match of the seniors’ group saw Karachi player Nomi Qamar winning his tie against Inam Gul in straight sets.
A tough competition is expected in the Group B in remaining two days after three local players poised the juniors’ trials securing two wins apiece on the second day.
Omer Babar, Tanveer Ashiq and Yasir Khan would be the top contenders in Group B from where only one player would be selected for the national camp. The trio won all their matches on the second day of trials.
