NFC award without provincial mandate rejected

By Our Correspondent

NAWABSHAH, Jan 21: Sindh PPP-SB president Meon Khan Rind has said that announcement of the National Finance Commission award by President Gen Pervez Musharraf without mandate of provinces has proved that the three provincial assemblies have no value in the country.

He was talking to newsmen here on Friday.

He said Sindh, Balochistan and the NWFP had demanded distribution of financial resources on revenue generating basis but the announcement was made on population basis to please Punjab.

He said Sindh generated maximum revenue and yet Punjab was given additional share.

Mr Rind said that power to impose sales tax was with the centre and was not given to district governments, which was an injustice.

He further said that the chief minister had no constitutional right to authorize the president to announce the NFC award.

Mr Rind made it clear that they would not accept the award on the basis of population.

PROTEST: Students of the Quaid-i-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology in Nawabshah blocked the Nawabshah-Sakrand road on Thursday in protest against the university administration after fall of a student from the roof of a university point bus.

As a result of the fall, Mushtaq Dhani was injured.

The protesting students said there were seven buses in the university but only two were plying due to which students had to sit on the roofs and such incidents occur regularly.

The protesters dispersed when police assured them of talking to the university administration to solve their problem.
