KARACHI, Jan 16: Candyland once again ran away with Swiss Movement bridge title at Karachi Club, National Stadium on Sunday. Candyland’s Hamid Mohiuddin, Ziaullah Baig, Mubashir Puri, Khalid Mohiuddin and Muhammad Ismail accumulated 105 victory points (VPs) to clinch the title.

First, they outscored Fine Foods 25-5, and then Ansaris with the same margin. Four Bidders also fell to their superb bidding and table-play losing 21-9; however, Chandna foiled their attempt in the fourth for an outright victory, trouncing them 18-12. EFU couldn’t stop Candyland and lost 22-8.

Chandna with a tally of 93 VPs finished second. The combinations of Saleem Ahmed-Shakeel, Chandna-Navaid Anjum, Jamal Nizami-Ghulam Muhammad produced winning swings against their opponents.

They defeated Sprinters 19-11, Mushtaque 24-6, Candyland 18-12 and Four Bidders 17-13, and played a draw against EFU.

Four Bidders finished third with a score of 90 VPs. The team comprising Mushahid Siddiqui Taqi Reza, SP Jamal, Qamar Puri and Shahab Saeed beat Mehmood 16-14, Aces 25-5 and Four Bidders Club 19-11, and lost to Candyland 21-9 and Chandna 17-13.

Asghar Abbas-Dr Ahsan dominated the 16-pair field in the pairs contest held on Friday evening. They won the title with a score of 67 per cent. Hamed Mohiuddin-Traiq Zafar scored 54 per cent for the second and Adnan Dada-Noman Shahid finished third with 53 per cent.

In the monthly pairs contest at Karachi Club, father and son pair of Qamar Puri-Mubashir Puri proved too good for the opponents.

Competing from east-west direction, they scored 60.50 per cent for the top berth followed by Asfar Kothari-Husain Jafer at 55.8 per cent and Akber Hayat Khan-Ramzan Hoda at 50.92 per cent.

Ghulam Muhammad-Jamal Nizami won the pairs contest from north-south direction with 59.5 per cent.

Mazhar Ali Khan-Mustafa Saif scored 54.60 per cent and A K Bhurgri-Asghar Naqvi 54.12 percent for the second and third positions.—PPI
