Toms cruises to 5-shot triumph

HONOLULU, Jan 16: Two months after surgery to correct a rapid heart rate, David Toms eased to a five-shot victory at the Sony Open on Sunday, the 12th PGA Tour title of his career.

Co-leader overnight with fellow American Chad Campbell, the ice-cool Toms fired a five-under-par 65 to finish at 19-under 261.

In dazzling sunshine at Waialae Country Club, the 2001 US PGA Championship winner birdied two of the first three holes to take control of the tournament and never looked back after that.

He picked up further shots at the ninth and 10th and it came as a surprise when he ran up his only bogey of the day at the par-four 13th after missing the green to the right with his approach.

Normal order was resumed for the rock-steady American at the par-four 14th, where he rolled in a seven-foot birdie putt, and he picked up his fifth shot of the day at the par-five last.

A relaxed Toms pocketed the first prize of $918,000.

Campbell, chasing his third PGA Tour victory, failed to reproduce his superb third-round form, a level-par 70 leaving him tied for second place at 14 under with South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini.

Sabbatini, the first-day leader after opening with a 65, mounted a last-day charge with eight birdies in a blemish-free 62.

Defending champion Vijay Singh, nine stokes off the pace overnight, also finished in style, a 66 lifting him into sixth place at nine under.
