KARACHI: Woman, son-in-law convicted

KARACHI, Jan 16: The district and sessions judge, West, Mohammed Jawaid Alam, convicted on Monday a woman and her son-in-law for adultery. The judge sentenced Shamim Akhtar and her son-in-law Jaffer Hussain alias Jafferi to suffer rigorous imprisonment for five years. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs5,000 each on them and ordered that the defaulter on the payment would have to undergo an additional six-month term.

The case against the couple was registered in November 2002 by the Moch Koh police on the complaint of one of their relatives Amanullah.

According to prosecution, Shamim Akhtar and Jafferi were arrested red-handed in January 2003.

During the trial, accused Jafferi submitted before the court that he had divorced Shabana, the daughter of Shamim Akhtar. He also placed an affidavit to this effect.

BOMB BLAST CASE: An anti-terrorism court put off the hearing of a bomb blast case against three workers of the banned Jundullah group after recording the statement of three prosecution witness.

Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 fixed Jan 24 for the next hearing after the depositions of judicial magistrate Rajab Ali Shar, Amanullah Kiyani and Mushtaq Ahmed, who were also cross-examined by the defence counsel.

At least 12 people, including Clifton Town Police Officer Munir Shaikh, were injured and a dozen vehicles were damaged in a car bomb explosion followed by a cracker’s explosion with an interval of 15-minutes along the parking area of Holy Trinity Church on Jan 15, 2004.

Accused Ataur Rehman, Shahzad Bajwah and Shahzad Mukhtar are being tried in the case.

According to prosecution, a cracker was hurled at a book shop -— Pakistan Bible Society -— which exploded injuring a bookseller. The police and rangers reached the spot and as they were examining the place of the nature of blast and its impact, a powerful bomb, planted in a Suzuki Hi-Roof, parked near the bookstore along the wall of the Holy Trinity Church, exploded with a bang. The car blew into pieces and damaged several vehicles.

Meanwhile, Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 adjourned the hearing of a bomb blast case against four workers of the banned Jundullah group after recording the deposition of a prosecution witness.

The judge fixed Jan 24 for the next hearing for recording the statement of the prosecution witnesses.

Ataur Rehman, Shahzad Bajwah, Danish Imam and Uzair Ahmed, represented by defence counsel M R Syed, have been charged with carrying out the blast, which also claimed the life of a man.

According to prosecution, the accused planted bomb in a snatched Suzuki Margalla (AB-0657) and parked it near Marina Club on the Zulfiqar Street, Defence Housing Authority, Phase 8, on April 10, 2004. The bomb went off at 10:30pm and three occupants of a Toyota Corolla (ABJ-020) were injured. One of the injured, Farrukh Zareen Khan Afridi, died on way to the hospital. The two other injured were Muzaffar Gobi and his cousin Abu Sufiyan.

Accused Shahzad Bajwa had allegedly snatched the Margalla from Rashid Ali Khan in Gulshan-i-Iqbal hours before the bomb blast.

The prosecution, represented by special public prosecutor Maula Bux Bhatti, has, so far, examined nine, out of total 25 prosecution witnesses.
