Horse-racing: Savabeel lands Hidayatullah Cup in style

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Jan 15: The Sir Ghulam Hussain Hidayatullah Cup ended in a blaze of glory for four-year-old filly, Savabeel, in the Winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday. As predicted in these columns, the filly ridden by jockey Ghulam Shabbir II, justified her top billing to win the seven furlongs race in a start to finish bid by seven and a half lengths.

The victory was second on the trot as Mujahid Ali piloted her home in the six furlongs last outing by 10 lengths.

In the pack of eight runners, chestnut Captain Crash settled for the second place while Harry Potter was placed third.

Dragun Heart, a five-year-old horse, superbly ridden by Fahim K, clinched the Eid Milan Cup outpacing the opponents in the six furlongs seventh race that featured 13 runners after Donatello was withdrawn.

After a slow start, he overtook Fakhr-e-Sanghar and then maintained his lead crossing the finishing post a half length ahead of Fly To The Sky. Excalibur had to be content with third place.

Dragun Heart’s victory earned Fahim K a splendid double as in the fourth race he sprinted home four-year-old colt, New Ferrari. Desperado was not tried by the connections.

Similarly, riding boy A. Aziz ended the day on a satisfying note to share the honours with Fahim.

He opened the day when he rode Laurel home by a convincing margin of 11 lengths in the opener and went on to complete the feat when mare Ouija Board outpaced all the opponents in the concluding race.

Lucky Step, a five-year-old bay horse, with Riaz Muhammad in the saddle, created quite a stir when he won the second five furlongs second race by eight and a half lengths.

Four-year-old colt, Victory Symbol, who was favourite to win, had to be content with second slot. He was chased by Rat Ki Rani.

Jawan Bakht, as expected, dictated terms in the third race winning honours by two and a half lengths, followed by Sweet Grandy and Fight For Fame.

In a closely fought battle, nine-year-old bay horse, Khas-ul-Khas defeated Qandhar by neck to clinch the sixth race.

While negotiating the band, Khas-ul-Khas went wide but recovered to win the honours after a long time.

The administrator of the KRC has imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 in addition to suspending the licence of jockey Arshad for two months for ‘unsatisfactorily riding’ Shamardal in the eight race. He finished runner-up behind Ouija Board.

He also imposed a fine of Rs. 2,000 on riders of Desperado, Eager Saint, Tom Cruise, Smashing Arrow, Khan The Great, Chand Aya, Lucky View, and Iztrab for ‘unsatisfactory riding’ in the fourth race.

The day also saw emergence of a couple of new horses including Khas-ul-Khas, Qandhar, Street Fighter and Fight For Fame on the track.
