Demand for ’07 polls under independent commission

By Our Correspondent

SUKKUR, Jan 15: MNA Mujeeb Pirzado has demanded fresh general elections in 2007 under an independent election commission and caretaker government. He was talking to newsmen at his residence here on Saturday. Mr Pirzado alleged that President General Pervez Musharraf was pushing the country towards civil war by creating a fuss over the controversial Kalabagh dam.

He said Gen Musharraf should be removed since he was not an elected president.

MNA Pirzado alleged that Gen Musharraf had subjugated the people of the three provinces and treated them as slaves.

He said the Kalabagh dam could not prosper Sindh as it was designed to store 6.2 MAF water while Punjab would be supplied 8.2 MAF water through canals.

Mr Pirzado alleged that following construction of the Kalabagh dam the Kharif crop in Sindh would be achieved once in five years.

Expressing his anger over the army ‘operation’ in Balochistan, he said the innocent people of Balochistan were being killed in the name of terrorism.

ARRESTED: The wildlife department has arrested 588 poachers and imposed a fine of Rs256,000 on them during the current hunting season of July 2005 to Dec 2006.

According to an official statement issued here on Sunday by the deputy conservator of wildlife, Mr Husain Bux Bhagat, said that different raiding parties were constituted in the Sukkur and Larkana division to check illegal hunting and poaching of the rare species.

These parties arrested 588 illegal hunters and poachers who were booked under the Sindh Wildlife Protection Ordinance.

They were also slapped a fine of Rs256,000 and released after filing of a surety bond that they would not indulge in illegal hunting in future.

The statement said that during the current hunting season, 64 shooting permits were issued to hunters through which an amount of Rs1,28,000 was collected.

Another amount of Rs1.137 million was recovered from different sources by the Wildlife in Sukkur and Larkana division which was deposited to the provincial treasury.

Mr Bhaghat said that the hunting season for partridges would expire on January 31 this year while shooting of ducks would continue up to February 28.

He appealed to the public and hunters to cooperate with the staff of the department for protection and conservation of the wildlife whose population was decreasing day-by-day.
