Horse-racing: Dumbo poised to win feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 14: Four-year-old dark-bay colt, Dumbo, looks set to lift the Sukkur Plate, Class V handicap race to be gone over 1400m during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

This majestic colt from English sire Stranger In Paradise out-of-Neptune Darling, Dumbo ran second behind General Councillor, a fortnight back on new year day.

Owned jointly by Mian Maahir Ahmad and Mahmood Khan, Dumbo is trained by A. B.Malik, who had made a mark among the ranks of trainers within a couple of years.

Mahmood Khan told Dawn on Saturday that the colt’s track work on Friday was very encouraging and he expressed the hoped that Dumbo would make amends for his previous defeat and win on Sunday.

Unlike other owners, Dumbo’s are different type of owners, whose stable crest is emblazoned with bold words “ always on try out”.

Dumbo should be followed by Key Guy Doll and Charming King in the fourth race in racing order.

Four-year-old chestnut colt, Alexander, who has two back to back victories to his credit will be on the trot to complete a hat-trick of wins in the fifth and supporting event.

The race consists of the second largest field of 14 runners barring last minute withdrawals and is to be contested over the sprinting distance of 1200m.

Hatam, Green Street and Rough Tough should fight for the less remunerative odds.

Four-year-old colt Fajr, who finished fourth in his previous outing will be going to make amends and win the second race.

The shapely colt owned by Shoaib Tariq is well-placed in the handicap to win the top honours. His close rivals could be Love Moon, Jago and Sindbad. Four contestants, namely, Phoenix, Blu’s Wendy, Manu Janu and Ministry are the pick of the field of 13 in the third race. They should fight it out.

Shatar, Zoro and Storm Warning look good in the sixth and last race, a class IV division I handicap race to be contested by a tiny field of six runners over 1200 metres. It should be a contesting race.

On form Shatar should win. The opener which has a 15-strong field looks an open affair. The first race will be held at 12.30pm.

LRC imports oats

LAHORE, Jan 14: The Lahore Race Club (LRC) has imported in bulk oats of fine quality from Australia for the horses stabled at the club premises.

The import of oats was ordered by LRC chairman Tariq Aziz keeping in view the scarcity of oats in the local markets.

Quality oats are being provided to horse-owners on comparatively cheaper rate as compared to the local markets.
