Masood and Abid claim honours

KARACHI, Jan 9: Masood Mazhar and Abid Mumtaz took top honours in the earthquake fund-raising bridge tournament involving legendary star Zia Mahmood, Pakistan Bridge Federation (PBF) announced on Monday.

Masood topped in section “B” securing 67.47% while Abid Mumtaz led the way from section “B” with 63.10%.

The event was held at Karachi Gymkhana Bridge Hall and country’s top notch bridge stalwarts Parvez Mirza, Abdul Rehman Allana, Munir Attaullah, Rashidul Ghazi, Masood Mazhar, Akhtar Zaidi, Kemal Shoaib, Zeenat Azwer, Tufail Shaikh, Khurshid Hadi and Zakir Mahmood took part in the competition.

In all sixty four players figured in the individual movement competition with eight tables and 12 rounds of two boards each.

Zia Mahmood played in each section for 50% of time on the stationary position #31 on table 8 and such could not win the event.

However, his presence inspired the players to attend and donate and Rs.200,000 were collected for the President’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

Zia is working with World Bridge Federation to run the second WBCF/ ECats Charity Pairs event to raise further funds with overall WBF target of US$100,000 for the four-day event which is being played acros the world from Jan 23.

1. Masood Mazhar 67.47%

2. Mazhar A.Khan 59.32%

3. Pervez Miraz 58.80%

4. Akhtar Zaidi 57.57%

5. Jamal Nizami 56.76%

6. Rashidul Ghazi 55.83

Section “B”

1. Abid Mumtaz 63.10%

2. Kemal Shaoib 61.31%

3. Salim Zaki 61.01%

4. Tabraiz Javed 60.12%

5. Tehseen Gheewala 60.12%

6. Zeenat Azwar 58.63%.

FOUR BIDDERS TRIUMPH

Four Bidders having the services of Mushahid Siddiqui, Taqi Reza, Jawad Abedi, Asghar Naqvi collected 94 Victory Points (VP) to clinch the weekly title of Swiss Movement Bridge on Sunday.

Four Bidders showing brilliant hands won all the five matches to take the top slot on the ladder in the fourteen teams competition.

Mushtaq having the services of Saeed Ansari, Mazhar Ali Khan, Javed Rehman and Mushtaq Mahmood won three matches to secure second spot.

Candyland finished third just a solitary point behind Mushtaq. The team comprising Ziaullah Baig, Hamid, Muhammed Esmail, Mubashir Puri and Group Ldr.

Abdul Kader Bhurgri and Shahab Saeed scored a magnificent 67 percent in pair contest held earlier.

A pair contest will be held on Tuesday at Karachi Club at 6.00pm All the bridge players are invited to feature in the event which carries handsome cash prizes.—APP
