Clyde stun Celtic
GLASGOW, Jan 8: Scottish Cup holders Celtic were sensationally knocked out of the competition in the third round when they lost 2-1 at second division Clyde on Sunday in a debut to forget for Roy Keane. Premier League leaders Celtic, 33 times Cup winners, produced a wretched display at Cumbernauld, Clyde’s home on the outskirts of Glasgow, and can have no complaints about the result.
Craig Bryson headed the first goal in the 32nd minute and, after Celtic keeper Artur Boruc saved a Stephen O’Donnell penalty, Edward Malone acrobatically cracked home the second in the 36th.
Clyde also had three goals disallowed, two contentiously, as their mixture of young players and free-transfer rejects looked the superior team throughout.
Keane, making his first appearance for Celtic following his departure from Manchester United last November, looked short of match fitness and was largely anonymous.
Chinese defender Wei Du also had a bad day on his debut after a poor showing in which he gave away the penalty and was eventually substituted.
Celtic finally found the target six minutes from time when Maciej Zurawski shot home from the edge of the box 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
But it came too late to prevent Clyde’s first victory over Celtic in 48 years.
“We were absolutely magnificent from the first minute to the last, Clyde manager Graham Roberts told Sky Sports.
“You saw a bunch of boys that we took and made into a football team. We had the men, they had the boys,” added the former Tottenham Hotspur defender.
“We had three goals disallowed, all over the park we absolutely annihilated them. We had watched them and we knew what their weaknesses were.” In Sunday’s other game Premier League Dundee beat second division Stranraer 2-0 with second-half goals from Craig O’Reilly and Simon Lynch.
Clyde’s reward for beating Celtic is another home game against second division Gretna on Feb. 4 in the fourth round following the draw, made on Sunday.
Minor league Spartans earned a clash with first division St Mirren following their 3-2 win over third division Queen’s Park. There are also two mouth-watering all-Premier League ties as Hearts host Aberdeen and Rangers take on Hibernian at Ibrox.—Reuters
