Benazir to select party candidates

Published January 9, 2006

LAHORE, Jan 8: The PPP leaders who met here on Sunday under the chairmanship of Qasim Zia left it to Ms Benazir Bhutto to select party candidates for the Senate elections. The participants opposed the Kalabagh dam project as all smaller provinces were averse to it. Some said Skardu dam was a better option in the prevailing situation. Instead of pitting the federating units against one another, it would be better to abandon the project and work on alternatives, they said.

They condemned the operation in Balochistan and Waziristan and demanded an immediate end to it.

They alleged that a 1971-like situation was being created by the rulers.

They resolved to resist all policies against the unity of the country.

The participants included Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Jehangir Badr, Khalid Kharal, Naveed Chaudhry, Altaf Qureshi and Abdul Qadir Shaheen.
