KARACHI: Changes in BCom syllabi approved

KARACHI, Jan 6: The Academic Council of the University of Karachi has given approval the BCom modified syllabi-2006 and the Vice-Chancellor Prof Pirzada Qasim has given his consent for its implementation this month.
Under the modified syllabi, any student getting less than 45 per cent aggregate marks would be declared ‘failed’ as the ‘third division’ has been eliminated.
The modification was approved in the light of the representation made by the Commerce Lecturers and Professors Association for raising the standard of commerce education.
According to Prof Mohammad Abdul Rahim, General-Secretary of the association, commerce teachers had been working in collaboration with Prof Dilshad Zafar, chairperson of the KU Commerce Department, for the last three years to improve the standard of the commerce education with a view to streamline it in accordance with the modern day requirements.
Under the modified syllabi, contents of principles of accounting, cost and advance accounting, statistics and auditing, as well as some other subjects have been updated.
President Prof Zulfiqar Ali and General-Secretary Prof Abdul Rahim of the association have expressed their gratitude to the vice-chancellor for taking interest in raising the standard of the commerce education.
The modified syllabi of B.Com degree course part-I will have six papers of 100 marks each and part III will have six papers, including one optional, of 100 marks each.
The compulsory subject of Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies will be of 100 marks with Islamic Studies/Ethics (for Non-Muslims) having 60 and Pakistan Studies having 40 marks.
Minimum passing marks will be 40 per cent in each subject but the aggregate would be 45 per cent. Those securing 60 per cent or more will be placed in the first division while those securing 45 per cent but less than 60 per cent in the second division. There will be no third division.
The six papers in part-I will be Islamic Studies/Ethics and Pakistan Studies, Functional English (compulsory), Introduction to Business, Principles of Accounting, Business Mathematics and Statistics, and Economic Analysis and Policy.
In part II the papers will be of Business Communication, Principles of Management, Economic Development of Pakistan, Advanced Accounting and Cost Accounting, Business and Industrial Law and an optional paper from the following: Auditing and Income Tax Law, Introduction to Computer Application in Business, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Insurance and Banking Finance.
