Sindh farmers grow aromatic rice variety

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 6: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (Unisame) felicitated the growers and millers of Sindh, particularly of Bagharjee area, near Sukkur, for successfully growing and milling aromatic varieties of rice, which have now achieved international recognition.

In a meeting held in the office of the Union, Convener Unisame Sukkur, Nadeem Ahmed Sheikh presented the varieties of basmati and super basmati grown in Bagharjee, Shikarpur and Shahdadkot areas and said it was indeed an honour that Sindh was now also producing the finer varieties of rice.

Unisame President Zulfikar Thaver congratulated the participants from Bagharjee and said that,” we are now receiving orders from overseas buyers asking for the Bagharjee quality by name and even the domestic buyers classify the rice from Bagharjee as superior.

He said this was the result of hard work and efforts made by the growers and the millers and, of course, the exporters who promoted and sold this variety in the world market. As a result, he continued, this small area near Sukkur is now known internationally and letter of credits established in favour of the exporters identify the quality by name.

He further said that other areas of Sindh also had the potential of improving their produce and they should leave no stone unturned and make all out efforts by using superior seeds for sowing.
