Germany wants AWACS to protect stadiums

BERLIN, Jan 5: German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has requested AWACS radar planes from NATO to protect 12 World Football Cup stadiums against terrorist attacks from the air.

According to Thursday’s edition of Die Welt newspaper, Schaeuble has submitted an official request to German Defense Minister Franz-Josef Jung, who is expected to decide on the request in near future.

The cost of such AWACS operation is estimated between US$10 and 12 million.—AFP
