KARACHI: KWSB asked to prepare PC-1 for sewerage trunk in Orangi


KARACHI, Jan 2: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has directed the officials concerned to prepare PC-1 for laying 36-inch-dia sewerage trunk along Shahrah-i-Orangi and Shahrah-i-Qazzafi in Orangi Town.

Presiding over a high-level meeting with KWSB officials, the nazim asked them to take necessary action for provision of improved sewerage facilities to the residents of Orangi.

He further said that tenders had been invited through newspapers for laying sewerage lines along 8000-Road in Korangi. Sewerage lines were also being laid along 12000-Road and from Daud Chowrangi to Korangi crossing, he added.

The nazim was told that the KWSB would try its best to complete all the ongoing projects under Tameer-i-Karachi Programme by June 2006.

He was also briefed that the replacement of sewerage lines at Shahrah-i-Pakistan from Sohrab Goth to Karimabad at a cost of Rs49 million had been approved under DDWP programme and the replacement work would be started very soon.

The officials further said that 30 per cent sewerage lines work at Rashid Minhas Road had been done and the project would be completed by March 2006.

The nazim was also briefed regarding maintenance of sewerage network near FTC Flyover.

Maintaining that both the KWSB and the Karachi Building Control Authority are part of the city district government, Mustafa Kamal said that they should coordinate with each other to expedite the work on ongoing development projects.

Meanwhile, the nazim reviewed performance of various departments of city government and directed all EDOs, especially officers associated with development projects, to utilize funds before end of current fiscal year.

He instructed that all departments engaged in uplift schemes to work on emergency basis so that execution of schemes initiated by the city government could be ensured. In this connection, he issued special directives to EDO (solid waste), KWSB Managing Director, EDO (works & services) and DO (PA&E).

The city nazim stressed upon KWSB to chalk out strategy with the help of latest techniques based on information technology, which could increase its revenue and improve recoveries. He observed that such strategy would help the KWSB minimize dependence on other departments and become a self-reliant institution besides increasing revenue target to Rs8 billion from Rs2 billion in the next three to four years.

TRAFFIC PROBLEMS: In order to make coordinated and viable policy to solve traffic-related problems, the city district government has decided to hold two-day conference in the last week of January.

This was stated by City Nazim Mustafa Kamal while talking to Citizen-Police Liaison Committee chief Sharfudin Memon, who called on him at his office on Monday.

The nazim said that construction of roads, bridges and underpasses as well as traffic management was needed to solve traffic problems and the city government had initiated work on all these projects.

He told the CPLC chief that heads of all concerned and important institutions would be invited in the two-day conference so that they would discuss the problems. Besides, representatives of transport organisations, rickhaw association, taxi union and other transport unions would also be invited to consider their view while making the policy, he added.

Mustafa Kamal further apprised him that foreign experts would be invited to share their experiences for making the transport system exemplary. The policy to be made in light of their recommendations would be strictly implemented, he said.

KHALIQDINA HALL: Mustafa Kamal has imposed ban on holding marriage and other such ceremonies in Khaliqdina Hall.

According to a city government handout released here on Monday, the city nazim issued directives to EDO (community development) Rehana Saif to get the ban strictly followed.

Mr Kamal said that Khaliqdina Hall was a historic building and its sanctity must be ensured and asked that strategy be devised for Khaliqdina Hall’s renovation. –-APP/PPI
