Umar, Tahir star in PIA’s triumph
KARACHI, Dec 31: Paceman Umar Gul and off-spinner Tahir Khan shared nine wickets to help PIA outclass Pakistan Customs by an innings and 57 runs in the Patron’s Trophy Grade-I match at UBL Sports Complex on Saturday.
Needing 324 to avoid an innings defeat, Customs were bowled out for 267 in their second innings on the fourth and final day.
Lanky Test medium-pacer Umar Gul, bidding for a place in the national side for next year’s home series against India, captured five for 87 in 29.3 overs and Tahir four for 77.
With former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram helping out as PIA’s bowling coach, Umar ended with a match haul of 10 for 151.
Opener Hasnain Abbas hit an attractive 64 with 10 boundaries and Afsar Nawaz cracked 72 with seven fours before Umar ended their resistance.
PIA collected nine points to raise their tally to 15 points in three matches.
