Horse-racing: Bang On Target fancied for feature event

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Dec 31: After capturing the Christmas Cup in her last outing, six-year-old mare, Bang On Target, is fancied to annex the New Year Cup in the Winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

After having a dismal run on five occasions, the mare finally rose to the occasion by outpacing the opponents with ease in a field of 11 contestants on Dec 25. Smartly ridden by Muhammad Essa, she beat her nearest opponent Silent Angel by five lengths.

Drawn in a pack of six runners in the six furlongs fifth race of the programme, she starts as our day’s best and should repeat her fine performance. Two-year-old colt, Moon Raker and filly, Makina, should battle it out for the next two places.

A card of nine races has been chalked out for the day. The first race begins at 12.00 noon.

Having won her last race by 11 furlongs, chestnut Silent Angel should win the five furlongs opener. She should be chased by Baby Tabassum and Bank Manager.

King Of The Field is poised to dominate the next race. He will be up against nine opponent’s and likely to be followed by Piyari Mehbooba and Khush Nazar.

Baba Jani, a three-year-old colt, should pick up the spoils in the third race having a strong field of 16 runners. After three consecutive failures, he overcame his bad patch to finish runners up behind Al Zarrar on last Sunday.

Eager Saint and Gold Disc should settle for the following two places.

Going by his form and fitness, four-year-old colt, Yes Neighbour Yes, should make it two in a row by winning the fourth race.

Owned by Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara, he returned with flying colours by nine lengths in the last meeting. He should be followed by Sweet Grandy and Aie Bahar.

Half-bred New Ferrari is fancied to emerge victorious in the sixth race with 13 aspirants in fray. He should be followed by Clapping and Chand Aiya.

Four-year-old filly, Smiling Face, who lost to Silver City in a closely fought race by neck on Dec 18, is our fancy in the seventh race.

With two wins on trot, three-year-old colt, Leopard, is favourite to perform hat trick in the eighth race while Air Blue should win the concluding event.
