LAHORE, Dec 31: Dark-bay filly, Motivator, is being fancied to win the New Year Cup, a term race for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies to be gone over the sprinting distance of 1000m at the Racecourse on Sunday.
This is a strange coincidence that the new year dawns exactly on Sunday and coincides with the staging of New Year Cup.
This is a show piece event regularly being held since the start of horse-racing in Lahore during British colonial rule over the sub-continent.
There are ten colts and fillies in the field barring last-minute withdrawals. Of them three come into reckoning.
They are: Motivator, Big Show and Hatam. The most impressive performer so far has been Motivator, the filly from One Against All out-of-Cisco Magic and she should win the race. Her track-work report is also encouraging to fancy her.
The filly from Re Play out-of-Next Generation, Big Show, who failed to put up big show on her last outing, will be on the trot to challenge Motivator and her half-brother, Hatam , who is also the progeny of One Against All. This will be the third race in racing order. The main supporting event, the Rohri Plate, a class II and III combined handicap race for imported thoroughbreds has nine contenders, from the lineage of English and American sires.
This race, which is held after a fortnight is eagerly awaited because the gem of horses take part in it. The bay English filly, Colonial Girl, who was beaten on her last outing by Mrs Moh, will take on American-bred fillies Chandni, Dinner Guest and English filly Free Fall.
However, Colonial Girl by virtue of her try run on Dec 4 last has an edge over highly pedigreed Chandni, making her debut.
The other three should prove her challengers. This will be the eighth and last race of the day. Trace Hit, owned by Khawaja M. Arif looks a good thing in the seventh race to be gone over 1300 metres.
Pawan, Stereo Nation and Mumtaz Mahal comes next.
In the fourth race Dancing Star and Charming King look good to fight for the spoils. However, Poly Love, a shapely daughter of Polinesso, can click on pedigree.
Two prize colts General Councillor and Dumbo are the pick of the 16-strong field for the fifth race.
Dumbo, jointly owned by Mian Maahar Ahmad and Mahmood Khan, has already won two races in a row and will be going all out against his speedy opponent, General Councillor, to complete a hat trick of victories. The only negative point against General Councillor is that the colt had remained off the field for about three months.
On the other hand, the plus point of Dumbo is that he is always on try out run because his owners go for win and not to lose and make money this way, as is the practice followed by unscrupulous elements.
Three-year-old filly Baker’s Gal, owned by Khalid Javed, though carrying a top weight of 9-4, looks strong contender for the sixth race, a class IV division III handicap race over 1300m.
The way she won her last race, makes her the probable winner once again.
The first two races comprise runners, mostly inconsistent performers and those having bookies connections and they are not of the worth to back but to enjoy tricks of the trade from a distance.
The first race will be held at 11.30am.
