Shujaat calls for PML unification

By Our Reporter

LAHORE, Dec 30: Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Husain has urged all PML factions to unite and bring back all those workers and leaders who had left the party.

He was speaking at a meeting held to observe the 100th foundation day of the Muslim League by the Nazaria-i-Pakistan Foundation and the Pakistan Movement Workers Trust at their auditorium here on Friday with the foundation chairman Majid Nizami in the chair. It also marked the beginning of the 100th year of the Muslim League in 2006 as it was founded in 1906 at Dhaka by eminent Muslim leaders of the subcontinent.

Ch Shujaat, the chief guest, said it was the Muslim League that had founded Pakistan led by the Quaid-i-Azam who was highly respected leader of the Muslims of the subcontinent despite the fact that he did not speak their languages like Urdu, Sindhi, Pashto or Balochi. Allama Iqbal was also its leader who was held in great esteem by the Muslims.

He said after the independence the Muslim League was divided and most of its leaders had fallen prey to the evils like hypocrisy, lust for power, nepotism and falsehood. He welcomed the decision of celebrating 2006 as the Muslim League Year to mark the centenary of the organization and said the PML should make all efforts to bring back all leaders who had left the party and joined other political parties.

He said the PML leaders and workers should also pledge to unite various factions of the party during the Muslim League year.

He said there was a great need for opening a training centre for PML workers and leaders.

Former senator Dr Javid Iqbal said unification of all PML factions was the need of the hour. He lamented that Pakistan as visualized by the Quaid-i-Azam and Allama Iqbal could not be made during the past 58 years. They had visualized Pakistan as a modern, Islamic, democratic, welfare state.

He said their vision could not be realized as long the Muslim League remained divided. Feudalism and lack of education were other serious impediments in the progress of Pakistan and achieving the objectives of its founders.

NPF chairman Majid Nizami said the unification of PML factions was necessary for the future of Pakistan. He welcomed the assurance given to him by Chaudhry Shujaat and Mushahid Husain that they would make all efforts to unite the party.

He said he played some role in making efforts to unite the Muslim League when he was asked by President Musharraf to contact Mian Nawaz Sharif in Jeddah when he had gone there to perform Umrah. Both Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif were not prepared for unification nor had they agreed to contact Chaudhry Shujaat to know the terms (for unification).

He said he believed that the key to unify the PML factions was still in the hands of Musharraf.
