Sri Lankan women register thrilling triumph


KARACHI, Dec 28: Spinners Suwini De Alwis and Shshikala Siriwardena share seven wickets to spin Sri Lanka to an exciting 14-run victory over Pakistan in the opening match of the 2nd Women’s Asia Cup cricket at National Stadium on Wednesday.

Batting first, Sri Lanka mustered 178 for nine wickets in 50 overs and then bowled out hosts Pakistan for 164 in 48.2 overs.

Left-arm spinner Suwini grabbed four wickets for 24 in a tight eight-over spell and off-spinner and skipper Shshikala captured three for 33 in 9.2 overs.

Opener Taskeen Qadeer hit a polished 42 in 74 balls with four hits to the boundary and Asmavia Iqbal cracked a fine 38 in 54 balls with the aid of four hits to the ropes.

Pakistan were tottering at 88 for six wickets but Sana Mir and Asmavia Iqbal added 66 runs for the seventh wicket to offer any real challenge to Sri Lankan bowlers.

Earlier, opener Dedunu De Silva made a patient half century as Sri Lanka collected 178 for nine wickets in their 50 overs after electing to bat first. Dedunu made 52 off 124 deliveries with seven boundaries.

Praba Udrwatte finished unbeaten 22 in 43 balls without any boundary and Indka Chandrawrithie contributed an enterprising 24 off 32 balls studded with four hits to the fence.

Slow left-arm spinner Urooj Mumtaz was hosts’ most successful bowler with three wickets for 40 runs in ten overs. Off-spinner Sabahat Rasheed chipped in with two wickets for 30 runs in ten overs.
