PABBF, PBF issues still unresolved

Published December 29, 2005

LAHORE, Dec 28: Another year has passed without resolution of the long-standing issue of forming constitutional bodies of the two national sports federations affiliated with the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA).

The problem to elect the constitutional body of the Pakistan Amateur Basketball Federation (PABBF) has been pending since 2000 and the Pakistan Bodybuilding Federation (PBF) since a year.

The PABBF is being run by an ad hoc body since June, 2000 while PBF is also being run by a caretaker, Muhammad Khalil. He took over after the death of former secretary Ismail Bhatti in a road accident in December last year.

The POA had resolved similar problems in the Pakistan Swimming Federation (PSF) and Pakistan Table Tennis Federation this year, besides granting affiliation to the Pakistan Baseball and Softball Federation.

The PABBF has suffered most from the infighting between POA and PSB.

The PABBF held its elections in Lahore on Jan 15, 2000 but they ended in splitting the federation into two groups — one headed by Air Commodore Afzal Khan (late) and the other by Brig (Retd) Rashid Malik.

To resolve the issue, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) held elections under its own supervision in June 2000 in Islamabad but the parties did not accept the final results.

The matter is in litigation in court.

Meanwhile, the PSB only sent a basketball team to take part in the first Islamic Solidarity Games held in Saudi Arabia this year.
