HRCP asks govt to resolve Kohlu issue

Published December 28, 2005

QUETTA, Dec 27: Asma Jehangir, Chairperson of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), has asked the government to stop military operation in Kohlu and resolve the issue through political dialogue. Talking to newsmen here on Monday, she said that an HRCP delegation, which she would lead, would go to Kohlu on Tuesday to learn about the situation personally.

Asma Jehangir condemned the use of aircraft and helicopters and said that since the Balochistan issue was political, therefore it should be resolved politically instead of through extra-constitutional methods.

She said that using guns was not only violation of the spirit of the federation but also infringes human rights.

She said that the HRCP would highlight excesses committed in Kohlu domestically and at international human rights forums.

The HRCP chairperson said that her visit to Balochistan was aimed at apprising herself of the actual position as visiting the troubled areas would be helpful in learning as to what was really happening there.

She said that people were deeply concerned over the violence in Kohlu and they as well as human rights organizations strongly supported the resolution of political issues in the purview of established democratic norms and human rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

The HRCP chairperson said that if any person committed a crime he should be tried in a court of law, and added that no one had the right or authority to punish someone according to his own conception.
