KARACHI, Dec 27: A number of newly-constructed and repaired roads in Lyari Town have developed cracks due to the alleged use of substandard material by contractors, residents say. Work on these roads had been carried out under the MNA and MPAs development fund programmes during the past few months.
It may recalled that President Musharraf had issued special directives to concerned provincial and city authorities concerned for reconstructing devastated roads after a visit to the town during the last monsoon.
As a follow-up of his directive, the authorities had undertaken works on a number of link and street roads in the 11 UCs including the Baghdadi and Darayabad union councils.
Residents have been repeatedly pressing the authorities for repairing damaged roads, some of them highly dangerous for travelling purpose.
They wondered and expressed utter disappointment since the repaired roads have developed potholes and cracks in a short span of time.
Work on an important artery Shah Latif Bhitai Road was even left incomplete.
Area NGOs and CBOs have alleged that substandard materials had been used in the construction of these roads, urging the authorities to conduct an inquiry into the sheer wastage of public money.
A mohalla committee representing UC Baghdadi in a communiqué to the authorities have expressed concern over the dilapidated condition of Shah Latif Bhitai Road, saying that complete chaos was witnessed day and night disturbing normal civic life.
They said that work on the important road had been left unattended for reasons best known to the authorities and added that despite frequent appeals no step had been taken to start repair work.
