Federal disaster management agency set up: PM


ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Monday said the government had decided to set up the Federal Disaster Relief Management Agency (FEDREMA) for improving coordination and organised rescue and relief operation in wake of any natural calamity.

Talking to volunteers who worked in the quake-hit areas, particularly the damaged Margalla Towers, here at Prime Minister House, the prime minister said, the agency would have the capability and resources to provide immediate help in case of a natural disaster besides motivating volunteers.

The prime minister said the agency would coordinate with all agencies, departments, hospitals and NGOs so that prompt and timely assistance and help could be sent to the affected areas any where in the country and abroad.

He said the agency would work as a ‘team’ having the services and contribution of the representatives from all parts of the society and government.

The prime minister said in case of emergency and natural calamity like earthquake, there was a need for organised efforts by the government and NGOs so that survivors could be given best possible assistance and help.

Volunteers belonging to Pakistan Police, Capital Fire Brigade, Health Department and Karachi Fire Brigade who worked in saving lives of people at Margala Towers narrated their touching stories on the occasion.

The prime minister later distributed shields and cash to encourage the volunteerism of these people who worked dedication to save the lives of people trapped in the rubble after the earthquake.—APP
