Jibran springs surprise

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: Jibranul Haq sprang a surprise at the start of the 2nd Quaid-i-Azam Islamabad Open tennis championship on Monday.

Playing his strokes with perfection, Jibran swept past third seed Khursheed Abbasi 6-3, 6-3 on the clay courts of the newly- established Islamabad Tennis Complex.

Competing in the under-15 singles category, Jibran, the losing finalist (under-13) of the recent Federal Cup, made his intentions clear with a fine display.

Later, Jibran was a comfortable winner in the under-13s, brushing aside Tayyab Sohail 6-0, 6-0.

Sadanul Haq, the national under-13 grass and claycourt champion won in the under-15 category, defeating Baderul Islam 6-1, 6-0.

There were only two matches played in the men’s singles, Yaseen Abbasi and Hassan Mujtaba the victors in their respective fixtures.

The event also features Pakistan’s top players Aqeel Khan and Asim Shafik.

Boys under-15 singles: Sadanul Haq bt Baderul Islam 6-1, 6-0, Syed Zain Abbas bt Abdul Raffa 6-0, 6-0, Farhad Ali Raja bt M. Atif 6-2, 6-1, Jibranul Haq bt Khursheed Abbasi 6-3, 6-3, Tabish Raza bt Irtaza 6-2, 6-2

Boys’ under-13 singles: Jibranul Haq bt Tayyab Sohail 6-0, 6-0, Abdul Haseeb bt Shahzeb Iftikhar 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, Salar Ahmed bt Umair Saeed 6-1, 6-2, Muaaz Bhatti b t Hamza Mubashir 6-3, 6-4.
