LAHORE, Dec 24: Fancied bay colt, Swing, owned by Mian Maahir Ahmad and ably steered by jockey Shahid Rehman won the Christmas Cup run over 1600 metres during the 17th Lahore Winter Meeting at the floodlit Racecourse on Saturday.
He beat chestnut filly Decent Proposal by three-fourth of a length. Another filly Trace Hit finished third, seven lengths further back while Pawan completed the frame.
As the race began, Swing, was fifth to take off behind Storm Warning, High Dream, Pawan and Trace Hit.
As the pack took the turn into straight Swing and Trace hit fought a neck to neck duel, but Swing with his swinging strides moved ahead and Trace Hit fell back and Decent Proposal took to second position.
The three finished the race in the same order. By virtue of this victory, Swing took his unbeaten winning streak to four.
He has also proved himself a definite stayer and as one of the strong contenders for the Pakistan Derby to be held in the first week of March next. The Lahore Race Club (LRC) senior steward Arbab Nur Muhammad Khan gave the cup to winning owner soon after the race.
The supporting and the last event of the day was bagged by a long shot bay colt Stereo Nation. The Mohammed Hanif trained colt was ridden by the jockey Azam Hussain to register an easy win.
The favourite bay horse, Green Street, piloted by the ace jockey Shahid Rehman ran off the frame.
Earlier the LRC stewards cancelled the fourth race because of the paucity of runners.
Of the nine runners drawn for the event, four withdrew prior to the race, leaving stewards with no option but to cancel the race under the LRC racing rules.
Thus the seven event card was reduced to six races. Two event were held in floodlights. The term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, Sialkot Plate, was annexed by a long shot bay filly Don’t Follow, beat favourite filly Big Show, who failed to put up a show worth her name.
Earlier, her rider, Shahid Mustafa was substituted by jockey Shahid Rehman, by orders of stewards , who felt the filly was not sent to perform on merit under Shahid Mustafa.
The filly was, however, beaten by a neck. The riding boy, Azhar Hussain excelled among riders when he brought home two winners in Sohna Malook in the opener and Don’t Follow in the fifth race.
Three favourites won in a card reduced to six events. They were Sohna Malook, Royal Destiny and Swing.
