Imran urges MPs to resign

LAHORE, Dec 24: Tehrik-i-Insaaf chairman Imran Khan urges all opposition MPs to resign from assemblies in protest against Kalabagh dam and army operations in Balochistan and Waziristan. He said at a press conference here on Saturday he would take up the issue at a joint meeting of the combined opposition scheduled to be held in Islamabad on Dec 27.

The meeting will thrash out future strategy for launching an anti-Musharraf movement.

Terming the assemblies dummy, he said Gen Musharraf was using the parliament to prolong his tenure.

He said all political activities had come to a standstill after Oct 8 earthquake but now it was the time for the opposition to do something for protecting the constitution.

Commenting on the Kalabagh dam issue, the PTI chairman said before developing a consensus among the four provinces neither work on the project should be started nor the World Bank should issue loan for the purpose.

Conceding that water reservoirs were direly needed for agriculture development, he alleged that Gen Musharraf had raised the issue just to split the opposition and to prolong his rule.

He said the president has no right to construct the KBD even after dissolving the assemblies.

The PTI leader said the people of Sindh and the NWFP did not trust the army ruler as he had not fulfilled any promise he made during his last six years in the power.

Mr Khan saw resentment against army in Waziristan as the locals were targeting informers of the troops in the area.

He demanded accountability of the rulers for handing over Pakistanis to Americans without trying the “suspects” in local courts.

He claimed that a Camp David report suggested that Islamabad had set up torture cells in Haripur and Kohat for “interrogating” the “terrorists” allegedly involved in the 9/11 incident.
