LARKANA, Dec 19: Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz chairman Bashir Qureshi has called for a complete strike across Sindh on Tuesday (today) to protest against Kalabagh dam. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr Qureshi also criticized the operation launched in Balochistan and said: “We feel it (operation) is against us (Sindhis)”.

He said that instead of occupying Balochistan’s resources, the people of the province be given rights. He demanded that the operation be immediately halted.

He said the Tuesday’s strike against the Kalabagh dam would be a clear verdict against the project and its movers.

“There will be a complete strike that will break all previous records and all nationalist parties and even the MQM had given positive response to the call” he said.

He urged the government to do away with what he called most controversial project.

He said large-scale fertile land would be destroyed in Sindh if the Kalabagh dam was constructed.

Local JSQM leaders Athar Soomro and Aziz Shaikh were present on the occasion.

NAWABSHAH: Activists of the People’s Students Federation observed a token hunger strike outside the local press club on Monday against proposed construction of the Kalabagh dam.

Activists were led by Mir Sohrab Khan Mari, the president of the Sukkur division PSF, Feroze Gul Leghari, Akhtar Rind, Akbar Kaloi and Nazeer Kalani.

Speaking to the protesters, Sohrab Mari said that the people of Sindh would not accept the dam whatever the cost.

They said the dam would destroy the economy of the province.

The protesters threatened to continue their protest till death if construction of the Kalabagh dam was announced.

SHIKARPUR: Activists of the Pakistan People’s Party cultural wing and the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz set up a protest camp against proposed construction of the Kalabagh dam at the Lakhi Gate Tower Chowk here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Barkat Bhutto, Amir Bhutto, Naseer Lodhi, Iqbal Memon, Rahmatullah Bhatti, Wajid Buriro and Ayaz Memon demanded that the idea of Kalabagh dam be abandoned forever.

Activists of different political and religious parties attended the camp.

Speakers said the controversial project would damage national unity as well as divide the country.

Leaders of the Jamaat-i-Islami announced to support the strike call of the JSQM for Dec 20.

Farmers also took out a procession in Garhi Yasin town on Monday to protest against rulers for constructing Kalabagh dam and poor price of paddy.

The procession started from Dakhan Nako which marched through the main bazaar of the town. The protesters also staged a demonstration.
