Bolivians get first indigenous president

LA PAZ, Dec 19: Supporters danced in the streets after Evo Morales, a firebrand leftwinger who has pledged to be a thorn in the side of the United States, claimed a historic victory in Bolivia’s presidential election.

The 46-year-old former coca grower is set to become the first indigenous head of South America’s poorest country.

“We have won,” Morales shouted to a rally of thousands of supporters in his Cochabamba stronghold. Morales followers also danced and waved flags in the streets.—AFP
