Turk engineer dies of tent fire burns

ANKARA, Dec 18: A Turkish engineer has died from severe burns he sustained during a fire in a tent city in quake-ravaged Pakistan, Anatolia news agency reported on Sunday. Geological engineer Cenk Yakin, 30, went to Pakistan as part of a Turkish project to build homes for victims of the massive tremor that hit the country on October 8.

He died on Saturday evening in an Ankara hospital, where he was transferred in late November.

Two other Turkish engineers were injured in the incident, which Pakistani officials blamed on quake survivors who set fires too close to or inside temporary shelters.

Turkey was the first country to send aid to Pakistan and dozens of its citizens are still in the country helping with relief and rebuilding efforts.—AFP
