Horse-racing: Jockey Shahid performs splendid double

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 18: Ace jockey Shahid Rehman put up a fine display of horsemanship by bringing in a brace of winners during the 16th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse before a large holiday crowd on Sunday. He first scored a short-head victory on Mian Maahir Ahmad-owned dark bay colt Dumbo edging out Charming King at the finishing post in the third race.

He then followed it up with a fluent victory on bay filly, Baker Gal, who beat fancied Taqwa by one and a half lengths.

His riding on Dumbo was a treat to watch as Charming King was at one stage leading by five lengths but when Shahid charged Dumbo, the colt from Stranger In Paradise came rushing to pip front runner by a short-head’s verdict.

The most impressive performer of the day was bay English mare, Penny Pie, who defeated Hidden Cave by about two lengths in the feature and last race of the day.

Trained by Shakir Hussain, Penny Pie is owned by Mohammad Yaqoob. Jockey Salahuddin (II) rode the winner.

Fancied three-year-old filly, Royal Destiny, trained by Haji Fazal Hadi, restored her connections’ confidence by winning the opener and put her backers on a winning note.

Subsequently, three other favourites, namely, Dumbo, Poly Dunit and Shatir obliged the punters to have the upper hand over turf accountants in a card of seven races.

The other three events were won by long shots.

Meanwhile, the champion trainer Haji Fazal Hadi created history when his third generation also took to horse-racing as a profession.

His two grand sons, Sameer Hadi and Waqas Hadi, started riding horses in the first race. Their father is also a rider, who is at present in England as a track-work rider.

Handicap matters

LAHORE: The importance of handicapping, which matters most in horse-racing once again came to light when a colt Scooby, who was penalised by an extra eight pounds in handicapping, was beaten to third place in the sixth race on Sunday.

Scooby finished behind Shatir and Run And Win. He was beaten by three lengths. Had the colt assigned its original weight, he would have performed differently in a neck to neck race.

This is the first instance in recent past that the handicapper has penalised a horse after assigning a weight in the handicap, later increasing it by an extra load of eight pounds.

This way the smart handicapper openly favoured other horses drawn for the event.—A.G.
